| Been awhile since I had my vacation.. the last few weeks have been interesting to say the least. I've done quite a bit of driving back and forth between bay area and Sacramento for all sorts of dinners, festivities, and a little exploring on my own. I start my Shriners Children's Hospital rotation tomorrow with a little anxiety as well as excitement. I will probably not like the early hours the most... the last resident left the house around 5:15am or so, but then again he had a pretty large census of patients and it has since gotten a little smaller. We'll see how I do.. I have not consistently woken up at five something for two months straight since internship. To celebrate Labor Day Weekend, I went to Marin to hike up Mt. Tam, then toured around parts of Marin for a nice Italian dinner and gelato later. Travelling back and forth and living out of a bag/car since I want to combine multiple activities in a weekend is fun, but pretty draining at times, especially on the drive home and afterwards. I either need to get more energetic and active, or moderate things a little bit. Despite the super early hours of the Shriners rotation, I anticipate it giving me more structure the next few months versus the driving around of my previous R3 outpatient rotation block. And.. as tiring as inpatient can be, I have historically enjoyed inpatient due to the stability and chance to get to know the patients, families, therapists, nurses, and ancillary staff. We will see how this goes... | | |
| Well, here's to the end of an unexpectedly great vacation. Leading up to the past week, I wasn't quite sure how things would work out as my vacation plans never panned out and I felt stuck and behind- rushing to try and find something to do. However, I think I was able to accomplish that rare balance of fun, excitement, exercise, grueling effort, relaxation, and even laziness. Here's a short and perhaps not complete highlights list from my vacation: - Wine tasting, mud baths/spa, swimming in Napa
- Dinner at CIA
- Wine tasting party in SF and catching up with old friends
- Hiking, pizza, and wine around Marin County
- Spontaneous solo day trip of a night hike to Half Dome (maybe last time I do this for awhile)
- Biking around UCD undergraduate campus and town of Davis, watched lacrosse for the first time in ages
- Kayaking and dinner in Tahoe
- First family-style Chinese lunch in quite some time with friends (including old college friend I haven't seen since graduation.. nine years!)
- Mini-shopping spree at Vacaville Outlets for new work clothes and other misc items
- Watching reruns of Kitchen Nightmares and Gary Vaynerchuk, tasting homemade beer with an old med school buddy
- Wine tasting in Amador County (Extremely pleasant surprise of a place to visit and so close by)
- Golf at Emerald Lakes GC in Elk Grove
- Tuned-up my bike, practiced some basic skills in my neighborhood (apparently, I don't like turning sharp and tight right turns down slopes)
- And of course, I was able to sneak in a fair amount of shut-eye as well despite some late nights
Whew! Now that's over, it's time to get back into the swing of things. Still a lot to take care of, but hopefully I'll chip away at it all.

| Made it back in one piece... again. As always, I'm never physically prepared, but made some additional planning mistakes as well. I think I did get some decent pictures.. nothing really at night though. More later... | | |
| Given the torrential nature of the last week or so, I decided this morning that I'd put off backpacking for another time due to logistics. I'm driving down to Yosemite tonight to hike Half Dome. Will not be much moon, but I think I have done enough research today and accumulated what I need. Starting off this late will be easier since my hike down will be under the sunlight. Hope I get some nice pics. There will definitely be some awesome views. Of course, I will be cautious and stay safe. Lots to look forward to at home. | | |
